Innovative nature-based solutions for the elimination of nutrients and veterinary pharmaceuticals from livestock agricultural runoff

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The LIFE4FARMS project is developing Wet4Agro, an enhanced nature-based solution for treating livestock wastewater by simultaneously removing nutrients, veterinary pharmaceuticals, pathogens, and antibiotic resistance genes. Three full-scale prototypes will be implemented, two in the Azores and one in the Czech Republic, treating around 40,000 m³ of wastewater annually. By combining constructed wetlands, advanced filter materials, IoT sensors, and AI-based decision support, the project aims to improve water quality and biodiversity while reducing costs, energy consumption, emissions, and environmental risks, creating a scalable model for more sustainable and circular water management in agriculture.
